Stories of bravery, transformation and impact.

Rwanda

After an engaging week in Pennsylvania, four Bpeace Rwandan Fast Runner entrepreneurs traveled to New York City  to apprentice with Host Companies and continue gathering transferable business and technical skills in each of their specific industries.

Symphrose and Consolata were welcomed by Host Company--the Ritz-Carlton New York City--where they met with employees in marketing, HR and guest relations.  Symphrose operates a restaurant in her hotel and so the women enjoyed a hands-on experience in the Ritz-Carlton’s kitchen with Pastry Chef Tony D'Adamo.  Donning chef hats, shirts and aprons, the women made creme brulee, cheesecake and chocolate molten cake with ice cream.  Tony gave them tips on how to cover strawberries without having the chocolate stick to the wax paper.  Symphrose and Consolata left not only with new baking skills, but with also a new item for their menu—The New York Ritz Park Cheesecake.

With spring arriving late in New York, Long Island and Pennsylvania this year, we adjusted Soline's schedule so she could fly down to visit blooming North Carolina.   Her varied stay in the U.S. brought her the experiences of acres of greenhouses, meticulously designed urban rooftops, and endless varieties of rare tropical flowers.  At Landcraft Environments, Soline learned advanced propagation, now she dreams of building her own greenhouse in Rwanda.

Languida had an in-depth look at the funeral industry in New York—she visited two funeral homes, a casket wholesaler, Green-Wood cemetery and a headstone carver.  In order to provide high-quality and affordable caskets to her customers, Languida wants to start producing her own caskets in Rwanda.  At Cobble Hill Chapels she saw caskets made from mahogany, cherry and maple wood in addition to metal. The coffins were lined with Italian linen and some were decorated with religious figures and carved plagues with the deceased’s name and dates.  Languida hopes to incorporate all of these ideas.

The Bpeace Apprentice Road Trip officially came to a close at a farewell party hosted by Bourbon Coffee. We sipped delicious drinks, passed out certificates of achievement and of course closed the evening with a little singing and dancing.

Thank you to all of the wonderful Host Companies:
